Making music is of special importance to Maori and the instruments support and embelish song. Taonga Puoro, the instruments, are all appreciated as gifts of the gods with the largest group being the flutes which come from the Godess of Flute Music, Raukatauri. She totally loved her flute and so as to never be parted from it changed herself into a casemoth, the female of which does not become a flying moth. To attract her lover she comes out and her music guides him to her. The flutes then are the family or whanau of Raukatauri. They are mostly made from either wood, stone or bone
